The Ice Dunk Debate: Four Experts Weigh In on Skincare’s Coldest Trend

5 min read
ice dunk skincare

The viral ice dunk trend has taken over social media, promising radiant skin, tighter pores, and a refreshing glow. From influencers submerging their faces in bowls of ice water to beauty bloggers swearing by its depuffing powers, ice dunking has become a go-to skincare ritual.

But is this frosty trend actually good for your skin? Or could it be doing more harm than good?

This article breaks down the four most significant benefits and risks of ice dunking, drawing on insights from skincare professionals and dermatologists. We’ll explore how cold therapy affects facial blood vessels, inflammation, skin barrier function, and long-term skin health.

What Is the Ice Dunk Trend?

Ice dunking typically involves submerging your face in a bowl filled with cold water and ice cubes for 10–30 seconds, sometimes repeating the process a few times. Some use it to wake up their skin in the morning, reduce puffiness, or achieve a temporary glow before makeup.

While cold therapy is not new—cryotherapy and ice rolling have been around for years—this DIY version is more extreme and less controlled.

1. Cold Therapy Can Reduce Puffiness and Boost Circulation

Used correctly and sparingly, cold therapy constricts blood vessels and reduces swelling, making the skin appear tighter and more refreshed. It can also help calm redness and irritation, especially after sun exposure or a poor night’s sleep.

“Cold therapy, such as ice rollers or short ice dunks, can help reduce inflammation and puffiness in the skin. While plunges have broader health benefits, using cold on the face specifically can tighten pores and temporarily boost circulation. Just be cautious — overexposure or extreme temperatures can irritate sensitive skin, so moderation is key.”
— Diane Howard, RN and Founder, Esthetic Finesse

2. Ice Dunks Can Shock Facial Blood Vessels

Facial skin contains delicate capillaries that can be easily damaged by sudden temperature changes. A long or intense dunk can cause these vessels to constrict and burst, leading to broken capillaries, redness, or even skin numbness.

“In reality, one risk from the viral ice dunk trend is hidden in plain sight: people forget that sudden cold can shock tiny blood vessels in your face. A two-minute dunk in a bowl packed with 15 to 20 ice cubes sounds harmless, but you can end up with redness, broken capillaries, or even numbness if you overdo it. Those with sensitive skin or circulation issues, like Raynaud’s, are flirting with real discomfort, and nobody wants to spend $300 on skincare just to get blotchy from an ice bucket.”
— Kiara DeWitt, RN, CPN, Founder & CEO, Injectco

“All that to say, using extremes for quick fixes can backfire. If you want healthy skin, keep it chill, literally and figuratively! Sometimes, skipping trends and sticking with consistency is the real beauty hack.”

3. Reduces Inflammation, but Not Without Side Effects

The ice dunk trend can temporarily relieve inflammation, especially post-workout or after a breakout. However, too much exposure can do more harm than good.

“The ice dunk trend could potentially offer some advantages in terms of reducing puffiness and calming superficial inflammation. The cold temporarily constricts blood vessels, and that fit, refreshed look is one result of it.
However, if your skin is very sensitive, a sudden plunge into frigid water can lead to skin irritation or broken capillaries. Excessive use can leave you with more to fear than just the immediate visual benefits.”

— Blen Tesfu, MD, Welzo

Important Note:

Those with rosacea, eczema, or highly reactive skin should avoid ice dunking altogether. These skin conditions often flare with temperature extremes and can worsen with cold shocks.

4. Can Damage the Skin Barrier with Overuse

While the occasional dunk may leave you glowing, repeated exposure to intense cold can impair your skin’s natural barrier. This can result in dryness, flaking, increased sensitivity, and even breakouts.

“On the whole, ice dunking can help reduce puffiness around the eyes by tightening blood vessels, which helps decrease swelling, thereby helping you look more alert and awake. It’s also quite effective at soothing minor skin irritations and mild acne because it reduces redness and cools the skin quickly.
However, I want to emphasize the need for caution, especially if you have sensitive skin. A significant drawback I’ve observed is that excessive cold exposure can damage your skin’s protective barrier. This could lead to issues such as dryness, peeling, and even increased sensitivity over time. For individuals with already sensitive skin, the intense cold might exacerbate symptoms, causing hives or broken capillaries.
While it’s tempting to view ice dunking as a quick fix, it doesn’t compare to maintaining a solid, scientifically supported skincare routine. I recommend using the ice dunking method judiciously and monitoring how your skin responds. If you notice any discomfort or adverse effects, it might be better to avoid it and focus on gentler, more consistent skincare methods.”

— Dr Susan Binder, Owner & Dermatologist, Binder Dermatology

Dermatologist-Recommended Safety Guidelines for Ice Dunking

If you’re still curious to try this trend, here’s how to do it safely:

  • Start with a clean face. Never dunk with makeup or sunscreen on.
  • Limit exposure to 10–30 seconds max, once per session.
  • Wrap a thin cloth around ice cubes to prevent direct contact burns.
  • Don’t exceed 2–3 dunks per session. Once a day is plenty.
  • Avoid if you have skin conditions like rosacea, eczema, or Raynaud’s.
  • Listen to your skin. Redness, stinging, or numbness are signs to stop.

Key Takeaway:

While the ice dunk trend might offer a momentary glow or relief from puffiness, it’s not a substitute for a long-term skincare strategy. Gentle routines with scientifically-backed ingredients like niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, and ceramides are far more effective—and sustainable—than extreme trends.

If you’re still tempted to try ice dunking, treat it like a treat—not a daily ritual.
